Morning Sickness – Tips on How to Combat it Naturally & Drug Free

By Melissa Moog, Itsabelly.com Founder

If you read my recent article I was venting about having morning sickness aka all day sickness so I wanted to share some quick tips on how to combat this icky feeling in your belly naturally and drug free.  I also want to thank all of our wonderful followers on Twitter and Facebook for sending in their tips. There is a link to our Facebook page below so you can take a peek at these tips too.

Keep in mind there are some cases where women need professional medical advice because their morning sickness is so severe and dehydration can be detrimental to the pregnancy. If you have a severe case it is important you consult with a medical professional such as your OBGYN as soon as possible.

First, what is morning sickness? In reviewing several definitions I found that the technical definition is stated as “nausea and vomiting of pregnancy”. In asking my doctor what causes morning sickness she informed me that no one knows for sure but some possible causes are:

  • A significant rise in the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). In women carrying multiples the hCG levels rise even higher.
  • A surge of the estrogen hormone
  • Sensitivity to scent. Many pregnant women have a heightened sense of smell which can cause them to be extremely sensitive to odors.
  • A sensitive stomach
  • You’re also more prone to having morning sickness: if you had it during your first pregnancy, you’re pregnant with twins or more, you have motion sickness, you’ve battled with migraine headaches in the past

Now let’s get on to the various natural and organic remedies that have worked for me and what other pregnant women have shared. Please note that you can purchase most of these items at a natural food store like Whole Foods.
